Wild Guys

One of the oldest cultural customs from pagan times. Passed down into Christianity. Carried forward to the present day. Back then, on dark winter nights, when the year was drawing to a close and the time of the shortest days and longest nights had arrived, people’s fear of evil spirits became overwhelming.

Brave young men dressed in fearsome fur and leather garments, covered with twigs and moss. On their heads they wore “Klöüsegrind”—animal heads with deer antlers or ox horns. And “a Rüete händ se i dr Hoand” (they carried a rod in their hands).

Shouting and cheering, they paraded through the narrow alleys with the clanging of bells and chains to drive evil winter spirits, witches, and shadows out of the village. And to spread blessings of life . Woe to anyone who encountered these wild hordes.

Even today, this unique custom with Alemannic roots is still practiced. For the knowledge of our ancestors has been incorporated into Christian rites and annual celebrations. In modern times, the longing for one’s homeland is the driving force for many. For the continuation. Of tradition. Experience it for yourself . Living traditions. On December 6.
