The Fascination of Biking

Around the World by Bike:
by Karl Traubel

Cycling is my passion, my great love.
I’ve been an avid cycling traveler for many decades now. And I explore the whole world on my bike. I’ve cycled along the Silk Road, in Iceland, and in South America; I’ve cycled through Bhutan; I’ve explored all the islands in the Mediterranean on my bike; I’ve cycled across the Alps on the Transalp route starting from Oberstdorf—and so much more.
For me, it’s always indescribably fascinating and exciting to get to know a country and its people this way.

But my cycling heart also beats especially fast whenever I explore my home region around the HUBERTUS by bike. Sometimes it’s a short, intense ride on challenging trails. Other times, it’s a leisurely ride along the Balderschwanger Valley all the way into the Bregenzer Forest and Vorarlberg.
Starting in the spring in the Alpine foothills, as soon as the trails are reasonably free of snow—when nature slowly “stirs to life,” as we say here—and the meadows transform into a magnificent green, while the mountain peaks still wave down at us in brilliant white.

In early summer, the hikes get longer: the route then continues on to the Maien—or summer pasture areas—of the Bregenz Forest. On these hikes, the journey itself is the destination. After all, there’s nothing better than stopping at one of the alpine pastures along the way and leisurely enjoying the first young cheese, known as “Suura-Käs.”

An absolute must for every biker is to ride into one of Oberstdorf’s valleys in the summer. To take a dip in one of our wonderfully refreshing mountain lakes. Or to cool off in one of the many natural pools or ravines. My favorite ride and my favorite spot? Of course, I’m not going to reveal that here. But I’d love to ride it with you when you’re here 😉!

E-Bike Vacation in the Allgäu

The great thing is: thanks to the incredible advancements in cycling—especially in the e-bike sector—absolutely everyone has the opportunity to reach these stunning destinations.
Some can, just like in the old days, work up a sweat battling their way up the mountain in Eco mode, while others ride right alongside them in total relaxation using Turbo mode. This way, you can enjoy beautiful rides together without anyone missing out or having to push themselves to the limit. To each their own.

Anything is possible. And the range is (almost) unlimited, since there’s now a cabin or an alp somewhere along every route where you can recharge your batteries over a cozy snack.
Because the battery is the heart of the e-bike …

Here at HUBERTUS, we also make sure to conserve your battery power for as long as possible so you can explore even further: With our “semi-trailer” (a bike trailer that holds six bikes), we’ll take you over the Riedberg Pass or the Lochbach Pass and drop you off at the best starting points for our favorite tours.

But even beyond that, my—or rather, our—passion is ready to take you to new heights. Because we’ve created the perfect conditions for biking. With

- Bike Shop
- Bike Parking Garage
- Introductory courses every Monday for even more riding fun and peace of mind
- Guided bike tours almost every day
- Helmet and bike rentals
- Tour map
- Snack bags for the perfect meal
- Laundry service
- and much more

I'm looking forward to taking you on one of my favorite tours again soon!

Yours, Karl
