Inspiration—Ways to Find Happiness on Vacation

“Paths are created by walking them,” once said the great writer Franz Kafka, whose 100th death anniversary will be on June 3, 2024.
That’s reason enough to take this motto to heart and broaden your horizons. So why not try something new and explore new paths—for example, on vacation? A whole repertoire of varied trails awaits guests at the HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio Allgäu. Even the journey there, via Germany’s highest mountain pass to the Riedberg Pass, leaves a lasting impression. And when the high valley of Balderschwang unfolds between alpine meadows and mountain peaks, a sense of joy begins to take hold.
Join us in exploring the trails in and around the HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio Allgäu, and let us surprise, inspire, and guide you. If you need further information or are interested in a stay, please feel free to contact us.

INSPIRATIONS - A TASTE OF HOME ON YOUR TABLE

The fact that good things are usually right around the corner is nothing new for the HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio Allgäu in Balderschwang. This Allgäu hotel has always relied on regional products for its “Holistic Food” concept, which focuses on health consciousness and a connection to nature: Nearly 60 percent of the ingredients for the dishes that Executive Chef Kristian Knölke skillfully prepares come from regional, organic farms.

The hosts, Christa, Karl, and Marc Traubel, have known some of the producers from the Allgäu and Bregenzer Wald personally for many years and maintain close contact with them.
The Gunzesried Mountain Fish Farm supplies fresh mountain char, while the award-winning mountain cheese and handmade goat cheese come from the Alpe Spicherhalde and the Lenzenalpe.

This connection to the local region is a true delight! Has this whetted your appetite? We’d be happy to provide you with further information or discuss the possibility of a customized research stay.

NEW HORIZONS - ACTIVITY PROGRAM AT HUBERTUS

The HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio Allgäu offers a diverse program of activities –
From ice bathing to spice workshops to summit excursions

Always exciting, sometimes surprising, usually free of charge – but never for nothing. That’s an apt summary of the wide-ranging program of activities at the HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio Allgäu in Balderschwang. As part of the comprehensive all-inclusive services included with your booking, it’s a key component of the family-run hotel’s holistic HolisticLife concept. This also involves trying new things, discovering previously unknown talents within yourself, and venturing beyond your comfort zone. Ice bathing is a very special experience for both body and mind. Once a week during the cold months, guests literally plunge into the hotel’s own natural swimming lake and experience the energizing effect of the cold water. They are guided by a member of the Traubel host family or by Martin Steurer, who developed his very own combination of breathing techniques and cold exposure based on the Wim Hof Method. Guests also get to “take a dip” during nature walks with Ranger Wolfgang Zeller. Whether on snowshoes in winter or in sturdy hiking boots in summer, the goal is to mindfully explore the hotel’s stunning surroundings—nestled in the heart of the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park—from fresh perspectives. In addition, daily yoga or meditation sessions, unique culinary workshops focusing on the power of spices and herbs, cultural events, and other outdoor activities are offered year-round—mostly free of charge or for a small fee. What’s exceptional is that all activities are available for groups as small as one person.

“Our activities program is just as diverse as our interests. On the one hand, we head out into nature, into our unique mountain home, and on the other hand, we delve deep into our inner selves. And that can certainly be unusual at times, like when we make a power stick together or at our legendary Kitchen Club parties,” explains Marc Traubel, who runs the hotel alongside his father, Karl Traubel, as part of the third generation of the family to do so.

Wine, Wormwood, and Juniper
At the HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio Allgäu, the HolisticLife concept of holistic health and well-being is particularly evident in the culture of food and drink. Almost every day, as part of the activity program, guests can immerse themselves in the world of spices and herbs and learn from Ayurvedic chef and food coach Gabriel Simòn Pinero why cooking can heal and why a chutney is much more than just a savory jam. During the weekly wine tastings in small groups, wines from Germany and Austria are the main focus, while those interested can sample fine spirits from around the world at Traubel’s Bar during gin and spirits tastings.

Readings, live music, and good vibes
A concert in a bathrobe? Nothing out of the ordinary at HUBERTUS. Samuel Heinrich regularly provides rousing beats in a relaxed atmosphere at the Mountain Spring Spa with his handpan and percussion. He’s also the one who, alternating with other artists, provides musical accompaniment for the six-course LebensESSENz menu every Sunday evening. Traditional Alpine music can be heard weekly during the Stubenmusik
. In addition, renowned authors and speakers often stay at the HUBERTUS, offering insights and inspiration through readings and lectures.

MOUNTAIN BLISS WITH A ZEN GARDEN - TAGBLATT ZÜRICH, MAY 2025

The Hubertus Mountain Refugio Allgäu is located in Germany’s highest village center, in the heart of the Nagelfluh Nature Park. The lodge is a place of tranquility, mindfulness, and the alpine art of living.

The car has just rounded the last bend in the country road when the pointed spire of St. Anton Church in Balderschwang comes into view. This village in Bavaria’s Oberallgäu region, with its roughly 250 residents and Germany’s highest-elevation village center, was accessible for centuries only via the Austrian Bregenzerwald, cut off like an enclave from the rest of the Allgäu. In a sense, Balderschwang has always been a refuge—and remains so to this day for guests seeking relaxation in the heart of the Nagelfluh Nature Park.
“People come here because there isn’t much here,” says Karl Traubel, host and senior partner
of the Hubertus Mountain Refugio wellness and spa hotel—the jewel of the town and also Balderschwang’s largest employer. ...
